This painting draws inspiration from a visit to Donousa, the northernmost island of the Small Eastern Cyclades, nestled east of Naxos and north of Amorgos. Steeped in mythology, Donousa takes its name from Dionysus, the ancient Greek god of wine, who, according to legend, offered Ariadne refuge on the island to hide her from Theseus.
The painting incorporates a photograph I took at the port of Donousa, capturing a quiet moment while waiting for the small ferryboat to take me to the neighboring island of Koufonisia. The photograph is seamlessly integrated into the artwork using a gel transfer technique, adding texture and depth to the composition.
Part of my Greek Series, this piece is one of three paintings, each meticulously crafted on wood and measuring 20 cm x 20 cm.
