Dette bildet samler bruddstykker av uskyld og sorgløs barndom: latter, lek, sol og iskrem. Men tittelen bærer også et spørsmål i seg: Hva vil det si å være et fritt barn (enfant libre) i en verden der så alt for mange barn lider på grunn av krig, sult og flukt? Dette maleriet er både en feiring av den sorgløse barndommen og en påminnelse om at vi aldri må glemme dem som er fanget i lidelse.
